Spider expert captivates Olivedale Library audience
Arachnid expert Jonathan Leeming gave a lively and educational talk at Olivedale Library, hosted by Fools, drawing nature lovers from across the community.
Nature lovers gathered at the Olivedale Library on July 16 for a fascinating talk by arachnid expert Jonathan Leeming.
The event was hosted by the Friends of Olivedale Library Society (Fools), who regularly organise talks and activities for the local community.
Leeming, who developed a deep love for nature from a young age, shared his journey of moving to South Africa in 1984 and joining the Spider Club of Southern Africa and the African Arachnological Society. With decades of experience, he gave an engaging presentation that covered the role spiders play in nature, their behaviour, and the importance of biodiversity.
Fools secretary Eleanor Woodman described the talk as: “Very fascinating, informative, and fun,” capturing the general feeling among attendees.

Leeming is well known for leading field trips, consulting on documentaries and TV programmes, and giving public lectures. His ability to make complex topics easy to understand left the audience both informed and inspired.
As part of the event, Fools also purchased copies of Leeming’s book, which will be available at the Olivedale Library in the coming weeks for members to borrow.
The Fools team was pleased with the turnout and hopes to continue offering talks that spark curiosity and promote learning.
