EcoSolutions and Owlproject.org mark Mandela Day with SPCA owl box donations
Randburg SPCA received owl boxes from EcoSolutions and Owlproject.org on Mandela Day as a thank you for the work they do.
In celebration of Mandela Day 2025, EcoSolutions and Owlproject.org donated and installed owl boxes at seven SPCA branches across Gauteng, including Randburg SPCA.
This initiative honours the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela through a project rooted in environmental sustainability, wildlife protection, and deep appreciation for the tireless work done by the SPCA.

Cayla Brown, of EcoSolutions, explained that it is always a pleasure to work with the SPCA. “Their passion, professionalism, and heart for the community align closely with our values. We’re incredibly excited to continue building on this partnership, and look forward to many more successful collaborations that make a difference, for both domestic animals and urban wildlife.”
The purpose of the owl box is twofold: To provide safe nesting sites for owls, and to introduce a natural, poison-free method of rodent control.

“Owls are incredibly efficient predators,” said Brown. “Capable of eating thousands of rodents each year. Encouraging their presence is a powerful step toward reducing rodent populations without relying on toxic chemicals and poisons.”
She added that this initiative comes at a pivotal time. “The recent national ban on popular rodenticides represents a major victory for South African wildlife. These poisons, once widely used, pose a serious threat to non-target species, including owls, who often suffer fatal secondary poisoning after consuming contaminated rodents.”
The teams at EcoSolutions and OwlProject.org are proud to stand in support of the SPCA, recognising its unwavering dedication to animal welfare, rescue, and education. “This Mandela Day, the donated owl boxes are more than just nesting sites; they are symbols of collaboration, sustainability, and shared responsibility for a healthier environment.”
