Randburg SPCA slams roadside animal sales

The organisation condemns those who are selling their animals for money, instead of putting them up for adoption, as their door is always open to receive these animals.

Randburg SPCA still deals regularly with the issue of animals being sold on the roadside. The buying of animals on the roadside poses as a danger, as some people do not have good intentions when it comes to buying these dogs.

On May 28, Randburg SPCA was made aware of a roadside sale that they had to quickly rush and stop. They managed to come back with two puppies.

According to the animal shelter, when they ask people who are selling the puppies why they’re doing it, many mention that it’s because their dogs just gave birth, and they don’t know what to do with the puppies, or they are in need of the money, hence they are selling the puppies.

Randburg SPCA kennel manager Cynthia Bezuidenhout said: “I believe people need a permit to sell [puppies]. Not only that, the roadside sales create a market that we do not need, as most of the time these animals are subjected to cruelty, not fed, and are hurt. Hence we encourage the public to notify us of such.”

The organisation has mentioned that they have tried to talk to people about selling dogs, as well as providing them with alternatives that they can work with, such as getting their dogs sterilised or putting them up for adoption. However, it doesn’t always work, since they still get calls reporting people who are selling their dogs.

“We help a lot of township animals when they are sick. When we help your dog, we make sure that it is sterilised. The same goes for our adoptions, because, by sterilising them, we are trying to put an end to the roadside sales,” said Bezuidenhout.

The organisation urges those that are selling puppies illegally to try and put them up for adoption with relevant organisations, and refrain from starving them, as well as being cruel to them.
