AfriForum Neighbourhood Watch pays Westpark Cemetery a visit

To ensure visibility and safety for residents who visit their loved one’s grave, AfriForum conducts high-visibility foot patrols in cemeteries.

Randburg-based AfriForum Neighbourhood Watch members recently conducted high-visibility foot patrols at Westpark Cemetery.

AfriForum is a non-profit civil rights organisation that was established in 2006. Their members contribute to their communities through various initiatives, and their goal is to have better and safer environments for all. The organisation’s projects and actions contribute to establishing self-dependence and growing self-governance within the communities.

The Johannesburg-North Branch participates in patrols that take place once a month, usually on Sundays. Elrien Bootha of the organisation said that cemetery patrols mean that people can visit their loved ones’ graves with peace of mind, as no guarantee is given for people’s safety.

“We provide this service because we care about the community and its people. In the quiet corners of our communities, cemeteries stand as sacred spaces where stories end, memories linger and loved ones return to pay their respects. But beneath the surface of solemn silence, a disturbing reality persists; these grounds are increasingly falling victim to theft, vandalism and trauma.”

Bootha added that the idea was inspired by several reports regarding cemeteries being vandalised and where mourners are robbed of their personal belongings while visiting their loved one’s grave.

“We encourage communities to become self-sufficient and involved in their areas, which is one of the initiatives to give back and show that we care.”

She added that the initiative has been received in a very positive way by the communities. “Visitors have thanked AfriForum for the work they have done so far and that they can visit the graves more frequently.”
