Burnt transformer leaves Cosmo residents in the dark for a month

It remains unclear when Eskom will attend and install a new transformer for Cosmo City residents who have been without electricity for over a month

Cosmo City Ext 5 residents have remained in the dark for more than a month after an Eskom transformer caught fire and caused a blackout in the area.

The transformer caught fire on July 31, and it remains unknown what the cause was.
One of the residents, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that the last communication from Eskom was that the transformer had been collected by a technician, and the installation would happen in the last week of August. “Since that has not happened, there’s no feedback to date on progress,” said the resident.
“We’ve lost food due to this, as the fridges are off. The security and safety of the residents are compromised, and it is difficult for the kids to study and do their homework.”

He added that they are paying customers, but they still struggle to get assistance. “Not receiving the service delivery as promised is not good. Eskom is also losing revenue on this, but still, there is no urgency on the matter.”

Questions were sent to Eskom, and they acknowledged receipt of the enquiry and said they will provide feedback as soon as possible.
Ward 100 councillor Lyborn Ndou confirmed that he is aware of the outage and has been escalating the issue with Eskom.

“Eskom is waiting for a 220kV transformer. They assured residents that once the transformer becomes available, they will install it. I am in contact with the entity because as long as the community complains, I take their cries to them [Eskom].”
