Johannesburg Roads Agency confirms closure of Drysdale Road
Johannesburg Road Agency to close Drysdale Road, which was damaged by floods 6 months ago, and is in real danger of full collapse.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirmed that it will be implementing a temporary full road closure on Drysdale Road in Randburg, effective from September 7 until further notice.
The road in Sundowner remains untouched and on the verge of collapse, six months after it was hit by severe floods that affected some suburbs in Johannesburg North. The floods pushed over a fence on the side of the road, as well as opening a gaping hole, which poses a danger to road users. It is a serious safety hazard, particularly because of the blind corner where the damage is located.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers explained that the closure is necessary to address significant safety risks caused by severe erosion that has compromised the road infrastructure. “The safety of motorists and residents is our primary concern.”
The closure will be implemented as follows:
Full closure: Drysdale Road will be fully closed to all through traffic between Brushwood Estate in the north and Gayle Road in the south.
Local access only: Access to Drysdale Road between Elnita Road and Gale Road (southern section) as well as between Taurus Road and Brushwood Estate (Northern section)
will be strictly restricted to residents only. Residents are advised to expect delays and exercise extreme caution in the construction zone.

Traffic management plan:
To manage traffic flow during this period, the following diversion routes are advised:
For Local Traffic (requiring access to the areas surrounding the road closure): Motorists are encouraged to use the local network, including Taurus Road, Keurboom Street,
Hardekool Street, and Denne Street.
For Regional / Through-Traffic (not requiring direct access to the area):
Motorists are strongly requested to avoid the area entirely.
Use the following regional alternative routes:
- Beyers Naudé Drive
- Northumberland Avenue
- Olievenhout Avenue
- Malibongwe Drive
The JRA apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks motorists and residents for their patience and cooperation while these essential safety repairs are undertaken.
