JRA has not fixed the water channel that caused damages in Bromhof
Johannesburg Roads Agency has not repaired a stormwater channel despite the damage it caused to a resident's property.
After months of promises, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has still not attended to a blocked stormwater channel that resulted in the flooding of a property in Flamink Street, Bromhof.

The channel that runs at the back of the property is blocked by rocks and rubbish.
Following the recent heavy rains, the property’s wall fell due to the overflowing water, in turn flooding the house of resident Faith Naicker and damaging its contents.
JRA head of regional operations Khaya Gqibitole said that the depot was aware of the matter, and they were responsible for the maintenance of the stormwater channel along the servitude.

He confirmed that there had been action, but because of the steep slope and vegetation along the servitude, it was difficult for a tractor loader backhoe (TLB) to excavate, for them to gain access to the servitude for regular maintenance of the stormwater channel.
He added that they had requested assistance from City Parks to cut down the obstructing trees so that the excavator would be able to access the channel.
Naicker said that City Parks had only removed a few trees. “They [JRA] haven’t even started digging. We’ve tried communicating with JRA on numerous occasions, but it seems they have blocked all our calls now. They do not respond to any emails as well.”

She claimed that this issue had been logged with JRA more than a year ago. “All we want is for them to clean up and dig up the servitude so that when we have the next rains, we do not have the same issue occurring again and damaging the new wall that was built.”

Questions on why it has taken so long to attend to the issue were sent to JRA but they had not responded at the time of going to print. Their response will be made available once received.
