Rand Park Primary learner comes to school with knife

Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that they are aware of the incident at Rand Park Primary School, and necessary disciplinary action was taken.

Safety concerns are growing as a Rand Park Primary Grade 7 learner was caught with a knife, along with a list of names of learners he allegedly intended to stab. Most of the kids on the list were Grade 7s, involved in sports, and some are prefects. The learner was suspended for a week as punishment.

Parents are not only concerned about safety, but also about how the school has handled the issue. One of the parents, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the child is known as a troublemaker, and the weeks suspension is not enough.

“I think it should have been discussed with us parents, especially since there are so many stabbing incidents at schools these days. It is typical of how the school tries to cover things up, so it doesn’t hurt their image.”

He added that the boy in question should have been expelled, as this was not the first incident in which he was involved. “He should have been expelled for his racism, when he came to school dressed as Adolf Hitler.”

Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona admitted that they are aware of the incident. He said that the parents of the implicated learner were subsequently summoned to the school, and he can confirm that necessary disciplinary action was taken.

“Furthermore, it was agreed that psycho-social support would be provided, to assist the learner with anger management and personal challenges at home. The safety of our learners is paramount. We will not tolerate any form of ill-discipline in our schools.”

He added that they strongly condemn any acts of misconduct which seek to undermine the dignity of learning institutions.

“Schools are urged to enforce their codes of conduct to deal with disciplinary matters. The department continues to appeal to parents in assisting to enforce discipline, in and outside the school environment.” The school was contacted for comment, but they haven’t responded. Their comment will be published once made available.
