Thousands of litres of water go to waste as leak remains unchecked

Water continues to run down the streets of Blairgowrie as Johannesburg Water fails to attend to a leak on Gordon and Mackay avenues.

Despite being reported and escalated by the residents and local councillor, Johannesburg Water has failed to attend to and fix the water leak on the corner of Gordon and Mackay avenues in Blairgowrie.

The leak was first reported on August 3, but fresh water continues to run down the streets. The nearby residents created a waterway to direct the water away from their properties, but it is causing damage on the side of the road, and to other roads, most noticeably Judy Road.

Resident Mark Sher explained that they have lost around 4 800l of water because of this leak in just 12 hours.

“That is why they can’t keep the reservoirs full. They blame Rand Water, Rand Water blames the mayor, he points a finger at the city, and the city blames the residents. This is criminal. Some people don’t have water. Water is precious, and here it just runs down the streets.”

He added that the water doesn’t even run back to the rivers and reservoirs again, as almost all the storm water drains are broken.

Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman recently visited the site, along with MP and DA spokesperson on water and sanitation Stephen Moore. She raised concerns about the entity not attending to the leak, while thousands of litres of water are being lost.

Moore encouraged residents to continue working together with the councillor, saying they would try to get Johannesburg Water to attend to the leak.

Questions were sent to Johannesburg Water, and they responded that they would liaise with the relevant depot to get more information. Their response will be published as soon as it becomes available.
