Workers discover human skeleton at Zandspruit site

Construction workers at the Zandspruit Ext 84 project site discovered a human skeleton on October 25, prompting a police investigation and renewed calls for accountability.

A shocking discovery was made in Zandspruit on Saturday when construction workers uncovered a human skeleton at the Ext 84 project site.

According to a statement issued by Ward 114 councillor David Mangena the remains were found by workers from TCT Construction. The matter was immediately reported to the Honeydew Police Station.

“The matter has been reported to the Honeydew Police Station, and a forensic team has been requested to attend the scene and collect the remains.”

He used the incident to highlight ongoing frustrations with delays in the City of Johannesburg’s Human Settlements Department and the Housing Development Agency (HDA).

The housing project, initially planned to take 18 months, has been ongoing for four years with no completion in sight.

“This clearly shows that someone is not fulfilling their responsibilities, despite being paid with taxpayers’ money.

We will continue to put pressure on Human Settlements to fast-track the completion of this project and ensure that our beneficiaries receive their stands.”

The discovery has raised further questions about the stalled project and accountability within the city’s housing developments. Mangena urged residents to unite and hold the City of Johannesburg Human Settlements Department accountable.

Police investigations into the identity of the remains and the circumstances surrounding the discovery are ongoing.
