Windsor East sewage crisis keeps getting worse

Ward 98 councillor Beverley Jacobs is taking the sewage issues in Windsor East up to the city manager and MMC.

The sewage crisis continues in Windsor East, on Duchesses Avenue and Republic Road.

Ward 98 councillor Beverley Jacobs has escalated the matter directly to the city manager and MMC of Infrastructure Jack Sekwaila, due to the severity of the public health and environmental risk.

Sewage continues to overflow, affecting Duchesses Avenue and Republic Road since October 27. Johannesburg Water (JW) has attempted temporary interventions, but the sewage continues to return, indicating a likely structural failure in the sewerage line.

Jacobs has confirmed that she has submitted a formal health and sanitation escalation to Environmental Health, and logged and tracked all relevant JW reference numbers.

She also requested both camera sewer inspection and permanent repair, not temporary clearing. “I have written today to the environmental health Inspector, the executive mayor, and the MMC of Infrastructure Jack Sekwaila, about my long-standing request for the upgrade of the reticulation system in Windsor East and surrounds, which includes the golf course, where sewage and effluent are running into the river.”

The constant sewage flow has resulted in dangerous potholes on Republic Road. “We can’t live like this anymore. The city is not doing anything. They have not done maintenance, yet they are going around for G20 putting lipstick on a pig. We are in the state we are in because we’ve got an administration that does not follow law and order. With regards to this issue, I am done being nice to the city and JW.”

She sends thanks to everyone who has continued reporting and documenting the situation. “Your persistence strengthens accountability. I will provide further updates as soon as inspection and repair timelines are confirmed.”
JW was sent questions, but has not replied. Their response will be published once made available.
