Sinkhole on Knoppiesdoring Road in Randpark causes frustrations for residents

An ignored sinkhole next to the Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge School, causes frustration for residents and motorists.

A sinkhole has taken over Knoppiesdoring Road in Randpark Ridge, causing daily problems for nearby residents and motorists who use the route.

The road has become a nightmare to drive on, with traffic congestion a constant issue—especially in the mornings, as it lies opposite Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge School. Motorists are forced to squeeze into a single lane, itself riddled with potholes. To make matters worse, fresh water continues to leak from the sinkhole, running down the road into a stormwater drain.

Resident Samantha van Nispen explained that the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) recently resurfaced the road but left the work incomplete because of the sinkhole. “This has been a problem since January.

JRA won’t touch it until the leak is fixed by Joburg Water. Water is coming up, and the road is cracking. Joburg Water came out and said they have fixed the leak, but we still see water coming out. You don’t notice because it’s running into that stormwater drain, but it is constant,” she said.

She added that it often takes three to four months for Joburg Water to return to address the leak. “The whole road is just bad and is a nightmare to drive on. There is traffic in the morning and from about 14:00 in the afternoon because of the school. The other problem is that there are school kids walking past the hole. It’s become a safety concern now.”

Another resident, Lean Bentley, said the issue at the intersection dates back to 2023. “They open it and put a new tape around, but it keeps leaking. We report again, they come after months to fix and sometimes close our tickets. They have been here four or five times since, but they can’t seem to find a permanent solution.”

Bentley also shared that she damaged her car on the road after swerving to avoid a pothole, costing her more than R2 000 in repairs.

Joburg Water has been sent questions about the ongoing issues, and their response will be published once it is made available.
