G20 and Women for Change shutdown set to disrupt traffic and commerce
Randburg commuters brace for delays on key access routes like Beyers Naudé Drive amid rolling closures on N1 and M1.
Traffic in Randburg is set for indirect disruptions from G20 summit security operations on surrounding highways, alongside a national women’s shutdown and targeted road closures this weekend.

While no full road blocks are reported in the core Randburg area, access to central routes, via Beyers Naudé Drive, may face delays due to security checks and rolling operations on the N1 and M1. The M1 West is experiencing broader lane restrictions and intermittent motorcade escorts, potentially adding up to 30 minutes to travel times.
These impacts coincide with the G20 women’s shutdown, organised by Women for Change, which calls for a nationwide pause in work and commerce today to protest gender-based violence and femicide. Participants are urged to wear black, boycott spending, and join a 15-minute silent lie-down at noon at designated spots, including Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Randburg. The action is expected to reduce local business activity and alter traffic patterns around protest sites.

In nearby Roodepoort, Hendrick Potgieter Road will be fully closed on Saturday and Sunday from 07:30 to 10:00 for G20-related security. Commuters are advised to use Ontdekkers Road or Christiaan de Wet Road as alternatives to bypass bottlenecks, and to avoid peak hours where possible.
Authorities recommend planning for extended travel times across the region until the summit wraps up on Sunday, November 23.
