Lucinda Harman resigns as Ward 102 councillor

Lucinda Harman steps down as the 102-ward councillor after 2 years in the seat.

Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman has announced her resignation after two years in the role.

She said that this was a tough decision, but it was time to make it. “I always said that this whole political area was only a season; it was never a permanent thing. I had to decide when to get out. I think from all the nastiness, the hostility, the attacks on my life, that was where I actually checked out. I realised I didn’t sign up for being attacked and being the centre of some target politically.”

Harman is stepping out of the role after some notable achievements, including the Re-imagine Randburg project, the opening of the Blairgowrie pool, and the installation of park fencing.

“I’m proud of the people that worked with me, a big thank you to Blairgowrie Community Association, my wonderful inspector, and my ward committee, who worked with me, supported me, and had my back. I hope you will support your incoming councillor till the next election.”

Being a ward councillor in Johannesburg was more than a role for Harman; it was a calling. She believed in accountability, compassion, and the power of community to bring about real and lasting change. Over time, that calling, once a source of purpose, became overshadowed by growing hostility and dysfunction in the political environment.

Harman said the intimidation of construction mafias, the breakdown of ward committee structures, and an atmosphere of toxicity made it increasingly difficult to serve effectively and safely.

“What should have been a space for collaboration and progress became one marked by fear and defamation. I did not resign because I stopped caring about people. I resigned because I could no longer serve with integrity in an environment that refused to care for its own.”

She thanked the residents of Ward 102. “Your strength, warmth, and trust gave me purpose through every challenge. To my urban inspector and a certain number of dedicated officials who work tirelessly, often without recognition, to make Johannesburg a better city — your commitment inspires me under trying conditions.”

Her final day of office will be on November 30, 2025.
