Gertrude Bridge floods again, prompting emergency response

Persistent rainfall has caused Gertrude Bridge to flood once more overnight, leaving dangerous debris on the roadway.

Gertrude Bridge has flooded again, following heavy rainfall last night, once more disrupting traffic and raising safety concerns for motorists travelling through the area.

The flooding led to significant debris being washed onto the roadway, including a guard rail and a massive tree stump, making the route dangerous and partially obstructed.

The affected bridge in Fontainebleau has experienced repeated flooding during periods of sustained rain. The bridge has become a known problem spot, particularly when water levels rise.

According to Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer, the situation escalated quickly overnight. “The bridge continues to flood, and every time it does, it creates serious risks for drivers who may not see the debris in time.”

Authorities have been alerted to the situation by Koekemoer. Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has been notified and requested to carry out an emergency clean-up operation to remove debris and restore safe passage along the road. It is not yet clear how long the clean-up will take, but officials have urged road users to avoid the area if possible.

This is not the first time the bridge has flooded, and it is becoming a recurring concern for residents. “We need motorists to take this seriously and drive with extreme caution until the road is fully cleared.”

In the meantime, drivers are advised to remain alert, reduce speed, and follow any temporary road signage or instructions from authorities while the clean-up is underway.

Adding to the concern, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a rainfall weather warning for Gauteng, effective from 08:00 until 23:59 today. The warning highlights the possibility of persistent rainfall across the province, which could lead to further flooding in already affected areas.
Residents are urged to be alert and take necessary precautions.
