Frustration for ward councillor as 3-year-old water leak goes unfixed
Years of water wasted as long-ignored leak on Agave Street in Randpark Ridge continues to cause frustrations.
The leak on Agave Street, Randpark Ridge, was one of the top priorities listed during the high-visibility operation, recently held in Ward 134.
However, the Johannesburg Water team did not attend to it. Almost three years old now, the ignored leak continues to frustrate residents and Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp.

There is a massive hole where the leak is, now filled with dirty, green water, with overgrown weeds in it, and insects flying around. The constant water runs down the road, causing more damage.
Steenkamp explained that, before the high-visibility operation, he was told it was one of the priorities that Johannesburg Water would come and fix.

“Because of a long-standing issue, we gave a brief to Johannesburg Water and various departments, to say that there’s a leak that has been leaking for many years and has not been attended to. We asked Johannesburg Water to please drain the water, to see what the issue is with the pipes, fix the leak, and then do a reinstatement.”
That was the brief they received and had on the day of the operation. However, the leak was, and remains, untouched. “No one informed me of any challenges or reasons they could not attend to the leak.

There was complete silence. Whenever we escalate, their responses are vague, offering no real answers. Management promises to attend to the issue, but nothing happens.”
He added that the hole is affecting residents. “This is an infestation ground for mosquitoes, and it definitely does disturb the residents.

Numerous potholes on other streets were recently repaired during the operation, but we now know the leak is still not resolved. This will continue, and it will create more potholes and create more problems for motorists.”
We approached Johannesburg Water for comment. Their reply will be published as soon as it is received.
