Randburg Bowls Club delivers gold and silver at Tower Novices

Randburg Bowls Club displayed dominance at the Tower Novices tournament, as players Else La Grange and Sarah Bredenkamp met in the finals.

Randburg Bowls Club are celebrating a major success on the bowls green.
This comes as two of the club’s novice bowlers won not just gold but silver as well, in a major bowls novice tournament. The Tower Novices, held at Wanderers Sports Club, saw hundreds of novice bowlers from as far afield as Potchefstroom, Pretoria, and Heidelberg taking part over a seven-week period. The tournament has been running for almost 50 years, and is steeped in tradition, with many top bowlers former winners of this precious title.

Randburg’s very own novice lady bowlers, Elsa La Grange and Sarah Bredenkamp, both reached the semifinals after a long, tough campaign. After tough semi-finals, La Grange and Bredenkamp met each other in the final. Whilst the two are friends and club mates off the green, the competition in the final was tough, with no quarter given or asked for. The game was eventually won by Bredenkamp.

She explained that it felt really special, and she was very proud, especially knowing how much she wanted to win this particular tournament. “Both the quarterfinal and the finals were tough. I was one set down in each. In those moments, I had to stay calm and keep reminding myself to focus on one bowl at a time, which really helped me stay in the game. Consistency played a big role, along with a bit of luck at times. Bowls can be unpredictable, so making the most of each opportunity is important.”

She said that, in the lead-up to the tournament, she practised as much as she could during the week. “Going into matches, especially the final, I focused on staying present, concentrating on each bowl, and not getting distracted by anything happening around me.”

La Grange said that she is obviously a little disappointed not to have won, but extremely pleased to have reached the final and got the silver medal. “Sarah played great bowls over the whole campaign and thoroughly deserved her gold medal. I am thrilled for her and for our club.”
