Crime at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre raises questions about security measures

Damaged facilities and absent guards raise urgent concerns about safety and accountability at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre.

Vandalism at the Blairgowrie Swimming Pool toilets has heightened residents’ concerns about security at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre.

What should be a safe, welcoming space for families and young people is increasingly seen as vulnerable, neglected, and exposed to criminal activity. During a recent oversight visit, Ward 102 councillor Bea Campbell-Cloete discovered a troubling reality: There was no security guard on duty at the time. This absence raised serious questions about accountability and whether the existing security arrangements are being properly enforced.

The facility is meant to have 24-hour security coverage, with one guard stationed at the recreation centre and another at the pool area. However, community members report that guards are frequently absent.

Campbell- Cloete said she received numerous complaints from community members that, at times, when they come to the centre, there’s no security. “We have an incident where, about three months ago, the creche was broken into, with no security on site. At the weekend, taps were stolen from the bathrooms in the pool area. I came to the centre after getting complaints from a resident. When I arrived, all the doors were open and no security was on site.”

She added that they are paying for security guards who are not on site, and the supervisors appear to be unaware of this. “We will definitely escalate this to the relevant portfolio and ask for some answers.”

Without a consistent security presence, the facility becomes an easy target for vandalism and other criminal activities.

Campbell-Cloete worries that this neglect not only leads to costly repairs but also discourages families from using the space altogether.

The situation highlights a broader issue of underperformance and inadequate oversight in managing the facility.

Questions were sent to JMPD about the security guards at the centre. Their response will be published once made available.
