Crime statistics released for Honeydew show increases and decreases

Honeydew’s second-quarter crime data reveals increases in carjackings, kidnappings, and robbery categories, with the CPF stressing continued vigilance and active community involvement.

The latest crime statistics for Honeydew, covering July to September 2025, show a mixed picture for the precinct, with notable increases in several serious categories, but some positive developments in police-driven crime detection.

Residents often request clear crime figures, rather than percentage-based summaries. As a result, the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) has compiled a simplified breakdown of the official SAPS report, to help the community understand current trends.

According to the data, one of the most concerning developments this quarter is the rise in carjackings. There were 16 more cases recorded, compared to the previous reporting period. Kidnapping cases have also increased, but the CPF stresses that these incidents are mostly linked to hijackings.

Michael Steyn, Honeydew CPF public relations officer, explained that these cases should not be misunderstood. “When a victim is taken along with their vehicle during a hijacking or carjacking, SAPS opens both a carjacking and a kidnapping case. These are not random abductions, but part of vehicle-related crimes.”

Increases were also recorded in robbery at residential premises, common robbery, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. These trends reflect ongoing safety challenges in the precinct and highlight the need for continued community co-operation with SAPS.

There is, however, a positive development. Crimes detected as a result of police action have shown a noticeable improvement, dropping by 66.2%. This decrease suggests that police are acting more proactively, and encountering fewer situations that require reactive enforcement.

Steyn said the CPF will continue working with SAPS to track crime patterns and support targeted operations in the precinct. “We encourage residents to stay alert, report suspicious activity, and remain involved in our safety structures.
