Diggers third team draws first blood in derby clash against Roodepoort

Diggers Rugby Club third team battled through a tough match against Roodepoort Rugby Club to win 17–10, setting the tone for a wonderful Friday night.

Diggers Rugby Club hosted Roodepoort Rugby Club in a much-anticipated derby encounter under the Friday night lights.

The derby against Roodepoort always carries extra weight for the local boys, but this match was different. It was tighter, colder, and charged with pride from both sides. The third team set the tone for the evening. From the first whistle, it was clear this would be no easy contest. Roodepoort came out hard, battling for every breakdown, every inch of turf, but Diggers answered with equal resolve.

The Randburg boys scored the first try, but missed a conversion. A few minutes later, after applying pressure, the visitors had a penalty to make it 5–3.

After a great play, the hosts got another try, but again failed to add 2 points in conversion, making the score 10–3
Crunching tackles kept the spectators entertained as Roodepoort clawed back into the game, taking their first try and conversion, pushing the score to a level 10–10 before halftime.

In the second half, a late try gave Diggers breathing room, so when the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 17–10.

A hard-fought victory and statement were made, and as the crowd cheered, it was clear the night belonged to the hosts, and the derby had just begun.
