Unika Voortrekkers camp fosters youth leadership

Unika Voortrekkers camp lesson’s will stay with the learners far beyond the day, shaping how they deal with challenges in the future.

Excitement filled the air at the Unika Voortrekkers camp held at Hoërskool Randburg.

Learners from different grades took part in unique specialisations to build skills and confidence. Each group had its own focus, but the high school pupils were especially eager to be on the fire brigade team. The learners experienced hands-on training through engaging talks and demonstrations. They learned about how to respond to emergencies, handle basic fire safety equipment, and understand the importance of teamwork in high-pressure situations.

Watching the professionals live left a lasting impression, as the pupils were inspired by the bravery and discipline required in the field.

Jaco Marais, leader of Unika Voortrekkers, explained that the camp was inspired by their belief to equip future leaders with the required skills needed to be contributing citizens of South Africa. “Safety is not an add-on; it is part of who we are and what we teach the learners from a young age, and it is built into our curriculum.”

He said the fire brigade specialisation was included because it combines practical life skills with leadership development. “It teaches our learners not only how to prevent and respond to fire-related risks, but also how to stay calm, act responsibly, and look after others in critical moments.”

The learners developed practical fire-safety awareness and learned how to identify and reduce risks in everyday environments. They gained an understanding of fire prevention, the fire triangle, emergency reporting, evacuation planning, the correct use of different fire extinguishers, and the basic methods of fighting a fire safely.

Marais said that the practical experiences do far more than teach fire safety; they help shape character. The learners are encouraged to become more alert, disciplined, and responsible, with a stronger sense of accountability for their own safety and the well-being of others. These experiences build learners’ confidence. “It was a good event. The presence of the Randburg Fire Station was a big hit, as the learners got to experience the use of the equipment first-hand.”

He added that the broader mission of Die Voortrekkers is to develop young people into grounded, capable, service-minded leaders. “It is about forming character, leadership, identity, and contribution. Die Voortrekkers is a values-driven movement that prepares learners not only to enjoy adventure and friendship, but also to lead, serve, preserve what matters, and make a positive impact in their communities.”
