NorthRiding Residents Association and Douglasdale CPF mark Nelson Mandela Day with community outreach

Kya Sands residents and patrollers received blankets and food parcels donated by NorthRiding Residents Association and Douglasdale CPF in celebration of Mandela Day.

In the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, the NorthRiding Residents Association partnered with the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and other community stakeholders to bring hope and support to residents and patrollers in Kya Sands.

The small gathering was at the Rooikrans Park in Bloubosrand, where community members, CPF representatives, SAPS officers, local patrollers, and residents came together.

As part of the day’s activities, the partners donated blankets and food parcels to vulnerable residents, helping to provide warmth and relief during the winter season. The community patrollers, who dedicate hours to ensuring the safety and security of the area, were also recognised and appreciated for their commitment to protecting their community.

“It’s a small thing, but every small thing leads to a greater good. By doing this, we create a sense of unity and togetherness. We are not looking for any fame or glory, but we did this for the people. We are hoping that next year this initiative grows even bigger.”

The event showcased the importance of coming together between residents’ associations, law enforcement, community policing structures, and local stakeholders. By working together, these organisations demonstrated that change is possible when people unite behind a common purpose.

Douglasdale CPF spokesperson Lizzy Mabena said she is joyful that, as the CPF on this day of Nelson Mandela, they were able to stand together as a community, specifically in the safety and security clusters.

“We continue his legacy; that’s why we continue to celebrate the 18th of July as Nelson Mandela Day; that’s why we’ve got the 67 Minutes of Mandela.

Today, it was good seeing the unity of this whole community.

We had businesses that came and supported this initiative; we had the temple that donated the parcels that were given today, and the blankets and all of that are based on the word of the community, and that’s what we’re grateful for as the CPF for today.”
