Book lovers turned out to support the Friends of Olivedale Library (Fool) at their annual R10 book sale, making the event another resounding success.
The popular fundraiser attracted readers of all ages, browsing through thousands of donated books while helping to raise vital funds for the Olivedale Library. Fool has built a reputation for bringing book lovers together, while supporting one of the community’s most valuable resources.

The sale features a wide selection of novels, children’s books, biographies, cookbooks, history titles, and more. Every book has been donated by members of the community, giving pre-loved books a second life while making reading accessible to everyone.

According to Fool chairperson Rod Pearce, the funds raised from the sale are used to support the library through the purchase of books and improvements to library services. He said the donations are from people who are emptying their bookshelves. “The books are not the same.

Some of them are not in good enough condition to go into our bookshop where we sell them for different prices. So, we put them on here to go for R10, and a lot of people buy them because they’re still in a readable condition.”

For Fool, the book sale is about more than finding a bargain; it is about strengthening the community, promoting literacy, and ensuring that the library continues to serve as a space for learning. “We have a bookshop which opens three mornings a week, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

That is where we keep better quality books, or better-standard books, from donations. They are sold for between R15 and R35, depending on how modern they are and what condition they’re in. That keeps building up the funds.”
He added that the sale was a success, and that they made about R4 500.
