Randburg businesses and residents unite for Sonneglans street clean-up

Community initiative mobilises local support, security and supplies to restore key intersection.

11 labourers and a group of volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to clean the corner of President Fouché and Witdoring roads in Sonneglans.

The Restore Sonneglans clean-up, on September 19, was led by residents and supported by Community Heroes Randburg. Vernalee Meintjes, of Randburg Rentals, helped lead the effort, arranged litter pickers through her business and was the contact for people who wanted to join. In a statement, Community Heroes Randburg founder Nikki Belt praised the people who did the physical work. “Every bag filled took someone’s effort,” she said. “The bending, picking up, carrying and gathering deserve recognition.”

She also thanked Meintjes. “Giving neighbours a way to get involved is such an important part of making a day like this possible,” said Belt.

Local businesses helped with practical needs on the day. SB Security and Sun Secure, with Westley Wynne, provided security. Aquo and Belinda supplied water, and Del Forno Bromhof supported refreshments for the volunteers. Meridian Realty and Mandy Allan supported gloves and bags, while Whole Earth Recycling supported refuse bags.

Helen McKane, of Life with Helen and Dogs, The Next Chapter with Nikki Belt, and Unique Techniques supported labour. Brian Can Help gave his time and transport support, and Terry Rowe and Alison Laxton sponsored the effort. “These everyday items give willing hands the means to get to work,” said Belt.

She said the morning showed how different people can each add something. “We can care about the same place and bring different things to its care,” she said. “An hour of someone’s time can meet a business’s offer of supplies.”

The next clean-up will be on Saturday, October 17. The time and meeting point will be shared once confirmed. “We would love to welcome back the people who supported September and meet neighbours and businesses joining us for the first time,” said Belt.
