Curro Aurora learner Vuyo Moyo donates first vegetable harvest to Delta Park School

A youth-led garden initiative in Randburg yields fresh produce for a local school's daily soup kitchen.

Grade 11 learner Vuyo Moyo from Curro Aurora has harvested his garden’s first crop of spring onions, spinach and lettuce to donate to underprivileged children.

Initiated about seven weeks ago on the school grounds, Vuyo started the vegetable garden project to give back to those in need. The fresh vegetables were donated to Delta Park School to support its soup kitchen, which provides daily meals for learners.

He explained that he started the garden to give underprivileged children something to eat.

“I’ve always had a passion for helping. Many people are struggling to make ends meet, and this is something small I wanted to do. Today I am proud that we are harvesting.”

Classmate collaborates on community project

While Vuyo initiated the project, he was not alone in bringing his vision to life. A classmate worked alongside him throughout the process, helping nurture the garden and produce fresh, quality vegetables.

He said that working alongside his classmate gave him courage and strength to keep going. “I believe every person who took part in the initiative deserves recognition. I couldn’t have done it alone — it was a team effort.”

Their achievement serves as a reminder that even a small initiative can grow into something big when supported by dedication and collaboration.

“The garden has grown a good amount of food. I am hoping this will continue and we will have more food to give away.”
