Women unite to support vulnerable children through Mandela Day drive
A local fundraising event is helping to push a Mandela Day campaign that will result in 20 000 sandwiches being distributed to vulnerable children in July.
Women in Randburg gathered at a creative fundraising event to support vulnerable children.
The Create for a Cause event, hosted by the South African Council for Business Women (SACBW) at Syringa Café in Bromhof, brought together women from the community through creating beautiful beaded key chains. This activity encouraged both connection and giving back.

According to SACBW representative Tanya Liebenberg, the whole drive behind the SACBW is firstly to bring women together to connect, but also to support the community. She explained that the event was also structured to encourage participation through creativity. “Creativity is such a nice way to express yourself and get yourself out of your everyday comfort zone. It is not a lot of us who get the opportunity to be creative. It gives you space to let your mind go.”

Funds raised will support the Belly to Brain non-profit organisation, which aims to assist vulnerable children.
Dominique Tibbles, founder of Belly to Brain, which was established in 2019 and officially registered in 2020, said: “The proceeds of the funds are going towards our sandwich day, which we are having in July.” To commemorate Mandela Day, Tibbles, along with other members of Belly to Brain, will spend 67 hours in a mall, from July 15 to 18 to create awareness and raise funds.

The fundraiser will result in the preparation of 20 000 peanut butter and jam sandwiches, which will be allocated to seven beneficiaries.
One of the attendees, Pam Williams, said she attended the event to support a charity that is doing so much good. “There is so much pain out there. There are so many hungry children out there, and we cannot help them all at once, so, this little bit that we are doing is helping to feed more people, so it is a small step in the right direction.”

Williams added that events like these unite the community and make community members aware that suffering exists out there.
The fundraiser highlights how community driven initiatives keep playing an important role, through supporting remarkable campaigns such as Mandela Day.
