SPCA Randburg appeals for public support as unpaid vet bills mount

Mounting medical costs and daily operational expenses threaten animal care and community support services at the SPCA Randburg in Northriding.

Veterinary care can mean the difference between a second chance at life and prolonged suffering for injured, abandoned or unwanted animals arriving at SPCA Randburg in Northriding.

Mounting unpaid medical bills, however, are leaving the society struggling to keep up, threatening the lifeline it provides to vulnerable animals and pet owners who have nowhere else to turn.

The SPCA currently cares for 100 animals, including dogs, cats, cattle, goats, pigs, sheep, geese and chickens. Staff members nurse these animals back to health, reunite them with their owners, or place them in new homes. Funded heavily by fundraising initiatives, public donations and charity bookstore purchases, the SPCA provides support to underprivileged communities where owners cannot afford private veterinary care. However, the current financial situation poses a major threat to these essential community services.

SPCA Randburg general manager Kaylie Henderson explained that veterinary services depend on each animal’s specific needs. These services range from examinations and diagnostic tests to treatment for illness or injury, wound care, pain relief, surgery, sterilisation and hospitalisation.

Henderson noted that these services are vital to ensure animals achieve proper quality of life and recover fully. Because veterinary care is a daily expense that varies with every arriving animal, all contributions directly sustain operations.

While the SPCA’s veterinarian continues to provide support, unpaid medical expenses have pushed this assistance to its limit. Without funding, animals face the risk of going without treatment. “Food donations make a wonderful difference and are always greatly appreciated,” Henderson said. “Alongside these contributions, financial support helps us cover veterinary treatment, transport and the dedicated staff who care for our animals each day. Both forms of support are essential to keeping our work going.”

She added that many households and businesses face financial pressure, but every contribution helps keep care available for the next animal arriving in distress.
