Hymany Dam serves as a popular recreational spot for local families, providing space for relaxation, fishing and leisure. Maintaining the cleanliness of the area remains vital to preserving its natural appeal and protecting local ecosystems.

Mashaba expressed his gratitude to the volunteers for their dedication to maintaining the public space. “I had the pleasure and privilege to engage with the community,” Mashaba said. “I am really pleased with the outcome, and I have great hope that all of us one day can live in a city where we can have a government that is responsive to our challenges.”

Project organiser Angie Steyn said the clean-up was initiated after she noticed the accumulating pollution in the water. “I am proud. The turnout was good, and a lot of good work was done,” Steyn said. “The people came, and it was a good community initiative. We do it for the interest of the community. We wanted to clean up for our fishing habitat and for the ducks.”

She added that discarded fishing line and plastic bottles had polluted the water. “We’ve had ducks being hurt, or even worse killed, by fishing lines,” she said, “but the community has really put together a good turnout.”
