SA beats the rest of the world

BOSKRUIN – People dress brightly as Randburg Bowls Club hosts Randburg International Challenge.

Where can Hungarians, Scottish and Zulu people play bowls together?

At the Randburg Bowls Club.

Everyone had a bowl at the Randburg International Challenge at the club in Boskruin, on 19 October.

Players were divided into two teams according to their heritage: South Africa and Rest of the World.

Loud speakers played various national anthems and cultural music, while players dressed their part for a best-dressed prize.

Alf Whiston heralded the start of the competition on bagpipes.

South Africa won with 56 points versus the Rest of the World’s 54.

“We are ecstatic with the win because we deserved it,” said South Africa Captain Jannie de Beer.

“It was a beautiful day, played in great spirits.”

The losing captain, Terry Turner, was visibly upset. “I am bitterly disappointed because our spirit was absolutely amazing,” she explained.

“The team played well and the whole day was played with heart.”

Players who competed for the Rest of the World hailed from Latvia, Hungary, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, Namibia, Italy and France. Hungarian Aggie Nyitrai won the best-dressed award.

Raffles were also won on the day. Turner added that “anybody who is not playing bowls needs to come down and see what it is like, be part of the community”.

This was the third year of the annual competition, and as it stands South Africa has won two and lost one edition.
