Waterborn swimmers shine internationally
MULANSHOF – Meet the heroes that represent South Africa in the swimming world.
Waterborn Swimming Club is home to two shining stars in the swimming world.
Sean O’ Neill (30) has competed all over the world including Ireland, Portugal, Thailand and Italy.
He has just come back from Morelia, in Mexico where he competed in the relays and sprints.
He won three gold and four bronze medals in the competition representing South Africa in the Down Syndrome World Championships in Mexico.
O’ Neill said, ”I swim last in the relay which means last is fast.”
The second star at the Waterborn Swimming Club team is Ricky Ellis (27).
He has been swimming with the club for about 14 years where he has trained to swim competitively.
Ellis leaves on 1 December for Qatar, Doha to compete at the World Short Course Championships.
He will swim in the 50m backstroke and 200m backstroke.
In fact, his qualifying time for the 200m backstroke was 1 minute and 55.9 seconds, smashing the previous record of 1 minute and 56.7 seconds.
He was only notified on 17 November that he would be part of the South African team.
Ellis is still training for the Gauteng championships taking place on 18 December.
In his time outside the pool he coaches for Waterborn and is busy completing his thesis in Finance at Unisa.
