Cool Runnings Charity Drive’s triumphant return

RANDBURG – Cool Runnings heroes return from their challenging journey to Port Elizabeth.

Ulrich Roux and Clinton de Klerk completed their 1 235km cycling challenge to Port Elizabeth along with other cyclists of Cool Runnings Charity Drive.

Roux and De Klerk set out on this long journey in aid of the Sunflower Fund of South Africa. The goal was to cycle all the way from Brightwater Commons to Port Elizabeth. Donations were received via sponsorships of each kilometre as well as tiers such as R10 000 increments.

“It was a challenging week, we had rain almost 60 per cent of the time, which was a blessing in disguise as it kept us cool,” said De Klerk. According to him, they both lost 35 000 calories each over the journey. They climbed about 10 472m in cycling terms and completed the 1 235km in 41 hours.

The men also completed the Iron Man consisting of a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42km run.

“We could not have achieved any of this without the great support we received from our family and friends that stayed with us throughout the entire journey,” said De Klerk.

He added, “We have managed to raise close on R200 000 for the Sunflower Fund.”
