Waterborn Swimming Club goes to Cairo
MALANSHOF – Waterborn Swimming Club competes in Junior Africa Championships in Cairo on 17 – 20 October.
A group of young swimmers from Waterborn Swimming Club in Malanshof are competing in championships around the world.
On 17–20 October Gabi Grobler , Khwezi Duma, Rais Hassim, Roberto Gomes and Rafael Zasas will compete in the Junior Africa Championships in Cairo which is part of the Egyptian Swimming Federation. Grobler (15) who hails from Sharonlea trains six to nine times per week and will represent South Africa for the first time.
Khwezi Duma (14) who stays in Randpark Ridge started competing competitively when she was seven years old. She will also represent South Africa for the first time and has hopes of winning a medal. “In Cairo I plan to do my best in the 50m backstroke and butterfly,” she said.
Jarred Baxter, Kyle van Niekerk, Mariella Venter and Katie Beavon competed at the Junior World Championships in Singapore on 25–30 August this year. Baxter found it very interesting to see other countries prepare and compete for the swimming tournaments.
Waterborn Swimming Club founder and head coach Peter Williams, who has been a coach for 19 years, said the swimmers who will compete in Cairo are the youngest and an inexperienced group. The team is currently hard at work practicing for the upcoming competition and practice eight to nine times per week in preparation to compete. “I expect the swimmers to do their best in Cairo, the Egyptians will be on their home ground so they are expected to be tough competition,” he said.
Williams said that in the group of swimmers competing in Cairo, Duma is very talented in the 50m backstroke and he believes that she will do well. “So far I am proud of how all the other swimmers who have already competed in different countries performed.”
