21st Northgate Road Race to attract 2 000 runners

NORTHGATE – No roads will be closed on 9 July, but minor traffic is expected.

The Roodepoort Athletics Club and Northgate Shopping Centre expects 2 000 runners to take part in their 21st annual Northgate Road Race on 9 July.

The event features a 5km and a 10km run in the area around the centre, starting at 7.30am.

No roads will be closed on the morning, but minor traffic disruption is expected on Northumberland and Olievenhout avenues as marshals direct runners and motorists along the route.

“We usually have 2 000 runners, many of whom are Comrades Marathon runners getting back to running after a break after Comrades,” said the club’s chairperson, Charlie Herselman.

“It is not too difficult, although there are some hills. It is a good race to get started on training for the longer races.”

The centre’s marketing manager, Natalie Kinsley said it would be a cold morning but hot chocolate and coffee would be available at the centre. “It is always such a pleasure to see so many community members

and families coming through to enjoy the event, and makes for an excellent start to the day,” she said.

The cost for the 10km race is R60 per runner, and runners who are not registered with a club must pay R20 for a temporary licence.

The fee for the 5km race is R30 per runner and no licence is required. Grandmaster runners pay R20 for both races.

Mother of Peace orphanage and the Lighthouse Baby Shelter will benefit from the run as R5 from each entry will go towards these charities.

The first 800 finishers of the 10km race and first 150 finishers of the 5km race will receive medals.

Prizes up to R700 will be awarded to winners in different categories.

Tickets can be bought at www.entrytime.com or at the shopping centre from 6am on the day.
