Diggers host charity rugby day for one of their own
PRAEGVILLE – Diggers rugby players raise funds for fellow player in need.
Diggers Rugby Club’s annual Charity Rugby Day was held in aid of one of its own players this year.
Brett Crowe (28) is currently in stage three of inflammatory carcinoma (breast cancer) and aims to raise R250 000 soon for an operation to remove a tumour.
Coming to his support, the club held an all-day affair on 7 October, featuring games ranging from U9 to open and old boys level. Clubs from across Joburg sent teams to make the day a thrilling event for rugby fans.
“I have known Brett for a long time, and when you play rugby with someone they become like a brother to you,” said club manager, Andrew Collison. “The whole club supports him and wants him to get better.”

Crowe has played in the 1st team since he joined Diggers in 2013, and struggled to find the words to show his gratitude for the support shown to him.
“I appreciate the help in organising this event and finding sponsors,” he said simply.
He explained that while he had been in pain, his greatest challenge with the illness had been to refrain from strenuous activities. This means he has had to give up rugby.
“I kept playing for a while but woke up later in so much pain. I still want to live my life, but I need to keep my heart rate down. ”

Diggers is organising further fundraisers for Crowe and will make the details public in coming weeks.
