Rand Athletic Club makes sure all members make it to Comrades 2018
BORDEAUX – The Rand Athletic Club has raised much-needed funds to take less-fortunate club members to the event.

For the first time in the Comrades Marathon’s history, the race will be finishing at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
To help members who cannot afford to make it to the momentous occasion, the Rand Athletic Club (RAC) at the Old Parktonian Sports Club has raised much-needed funds to take less- fortunate club members to the event.
RAC’s Vreni Welch said, “The preparations for the race have gone fantastically well, we just have to get to Durban now.
“Presumably, entering the stadium will be much like Soccer City is for the Soweto Marathon. The route is no longer than the routes used before the run reverted to the motorway.”
A statement on their website said that the RAC has a few members who are unemployed, either due to unfortunate circumstances or retirement.
It said that retirees have to survive on their pensions, which seldom stretch to extras like travel, and the club’s main goal is to ‘never have to leave anyone at home’.
The club will use this travel fund to subsidise some members travel to the Comrades Marathon and to provide each runner with a commemorative T-shirt.
To inspire the club members, long-time member and Comrades Marathon veteran Bruce Fordyce spoke to over 180 members at a club meeting, sharing his experience in a motivating message on 22 May.
Welch said, “I know that a lot of our members will definitely get silvers, but mainly, I know that they will all finish the race and have fun.”
