Harriers postpones all foreseeable runs

PRAEGVILLE – The local running club chooses to err on the side of caution and not host the Easter 100.

Randburg Harriers have postponed all foreseeable events, including cancelling the annual Easter 100, in light of the coronavirus outbreak and President Cyril Ramaphosa’s instructions to not hold gatherings of more than 100 people.

Athletics South Africa decided to postpone all its major athletic events for 30 days, starting from 16 March, following the President’s message. The Easter 100 would have fallen within this time, but Randburg Harriers has also decided to postpone all weekly time trials and club runs.

“We would rather err on the side of caution, as most of our runs see more than 100 people,” explained club captain John Neale.

The annual Discovery Vitality run at Randburg Harriers often sees around 6 000 runners each year.

He said he still expected the club’s runners and runners of other clubs to break into smaller groups and run by themselves during the upcoming weeks. However, this is not as safe as running in larger numbers, and Neale lamented the Catch-22 situation.

The Easter 100 includes a series of runs over the Easter weekend that add up to 100km. It is a popular series for those training for the Comrades Marathon and other ultra marathons.
