Joburg’s classic road race is back

For the past 37 years, the race has been a Joburg classic.

Old Parks Sports Club hosted the Rand Athletic Club (RAC) for the annual RAC 10km road race which saw hundreds of runners taking to the streets of Bordeaux and Hurlingham on May 29.

For the past 37 years, the race has been a Joburg classic. Rand Athletic Club is known for holding excellent, well organised events that cater for runners of all abilities.
“It [race] took place for the first time since Covid and some runners found the course a bit tougher than usual,” said Lizette Driesche of Old Parks.

The route took runners via Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nicol Drive on the way to Hurlingham and Craighall Park, with some steep hills in-between.

“The weather gods were smiling and the runners got to enjoy Joburg’s favourite 10km race, which started at the beautiful Old Parktonian Sports Club and led them through our lovely autumn-leaved northern suburbs,” said Megan Davey of Rand Athletic Club.

“We all know how difficult it is for moms to get back into running or committing to any regular training programme after their children arrive, so RAC has shown their admiration for all the moms that participated in the race and honoured them by awarding the first three moms who crossed the finish line with their children in strollers with a huge RAC teddy bear.”

The club congratulated Catherine Du Bois, Helena Oberholzer and Frances Thomas who ran some spectacular times and walked away with a special teddy bear, and extended their appreciation to The Sweatshop for their continued generous sponsorship.
