Fatherhood Run/Walk brings in funds for boys’ mentorship and positive manhood programmes

The run raised R40 000 toward the campaign's target of R150 000.

A recent run/walk to raise awareness of the social challenge that is fatherlessness and funds for a boys’ mentorship programme, was a grand success.

The event started and ended at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium in Roodepoort but parts of the longer runs (runs were between 2km and 67km) went through Randburg before winding back to the stadium.

Sylvester Mashilo Foundation hosted the event in partnership with the City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Department, for its boys’ mentorship and positive manhood programmes.

The organisation’s founder, Sylvester Mashilo, said it was extremely cold on the two days the runs were held.

“The thought of quitting crossed my mind [but] fatherhood is in itself not an easy thing,” he said.

“We must press on for the reward – bringing up healthy children who are the truest future of this country.”

Mashilo said R40 000 was raised toward his target of R150 000.

“Our campaign runs until the end of July. We had 250 registered participants. The highlight was the spirit of community displayed by our participants who waited long after their events to welcome the participants of the 67km night run. The mayor of Johannesburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse completed the 5km run.”
