Moeketsi said that the countless training sessions and hours spent away from family and friends are made worthwhile when runners are awarded. “It means a lot to them to be recognised by their peers and other aspirant Comrades runners. Knowing that their efforts and hard work could result in a new award, or being first in their respective age groups, is a big motivator to most of the Comrades runners. It always feels good if things go according to plan on race day, and, in turn, they are celebrated.”

She added that the club’s ceremony also acts as motivation for new runners, and those who have dreams of running the ultimate human race in the future. “They also want to be part of a group that gets celebrated after all their hard work.”
