Goalkeeper’s penalty rescues point for Happy Boys

Despite an own goal and a red card, Happy Boys Under-13 showed resilience, levelling through their goalkeeper’s penalty to hold Cosmo Talent 1-1 in Matchweek 21.

The Cosmo City Local Football Association Junior League produced an eventful Matchweek 21 clash between Happy Boys Under-13 and Cosmo Talent Under-13, ending in a 1-1 draw.

Happy Boys were punished almost immediately after kick-off, conceding an own goal that gave Cosmo Talent an early lead. Their problems deepened when a player was sent off for swearing at an opponent, leaving them to battle with 10 men for the rest of the game.

Despite the tough start, Happy Boys came out guns blazing in the second half. Their resilience paid off when they earned a penalty, confidently converted by their goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1.

The spirited fightback ensured they avoided defeat and left with a valuable point.

Assistant coach of Happy Boys, 15-year-old Lethabo Kgobokwane, currently training to become a coach, praised the team’s determination.

“Overall, not that bad. It’s just a bit shaky here and there, but if we correct that in training, it will be good,” he said.
On the red card, he added: “It was kind of unfair. I thought it should have been a yellow, but we play by the referee’s rules. We just had to push on with the 10 men we had.”

He also explained why the goalkeeper stepped up for the penalty: “He mostly takes the penalties because he’s really good at them, so we just let him take it.” Looking ahead, he said the team’s aim is to break into the top eight, but admitted they must win their remaining games, as they currently sit 12th on the log.

Cosmo Talent centre-back Vhutali Luvhengo expressed frustration that his team could not secure the win despite their numerical advantage. “We should have put the game to bed, but there were too many misplaced passes and that slowed us down,” he said.

The result leaves both sides with plenty to improve on, but Happy Boys will take heart from their determined comeback in a game that could easily have slipped away from them.
