Prizegiving event celebrates massive season for Diggers Rugby Club Juniors

The Diggers Rugby Club was filled with excitement as the juniors were celebrated for an outstanding 2025 season.

Parents and management came out in numbers to cheer for the Digger Rugby Club Juniors as they celebrated a stella season at their prizegiving.

Players, from U6 to U18, as well as the ladies’ team, were honoured with certificates for Best Players, with Players of the Year receiving trophies for their hard work.

Jeanne Opperman, Diggers Jnr chairperson, explained that it was a fantastic day, and the awards ceremony was a huge success with so many players and families joining the celebrations.

“It’s important for us to hold these awards, as our way of thanking the players, and recognising the hard work and effort they put in throughout the season.”

Three teams were recognised as Teams of the Year. In the cubs’ section (ages U6 to U8), the U8 group took home the award after a season of hard work and dedication. In the barefoot section (ages U9 to U12), the U11 team earned this title.

Finally, in the boots section, the U16s were once again named Team of the Year – an incredible achievement as this marks their third consecutive win.

“The Diggers players take great pride in celebrating each other’s successes at these events,” said Opperman. “At the end of the day, it’s the camaraderie and team spirit that truly shines through.”

The club also honoured an extraordinary milestone of 38 players selected at the Inter-Provincial Tournament’s (IPT) 20th anniversary, along with, five coaching staff members, and three Diggers Girls on Fire players chosen for the girls’ sides.

“This is a proud moment for the entire Diggers community,” said Opperman.

“From our youngest players to our seasoned coaches, every selection is a reflection of hard work, passion, and the Diggers legacy, and having three girls selected… That’s history in the making.”

As the 2025 IPTs unfold, Diggers stands tall, not just as a club, but as a movement shaping the future of South African rugby. “Congratulations to all our players, coaches, and team managers. You’ve made Diggers proud.”

The club will hold an annual general meeting, at Diggers Sports Pub at 18:00 on November 13, to discuss the 2025 season and plans for 2026. “We encourage all active Diggers members to attend the meeting.”
