Randburg AFC demolish East Rand in GDL

A week after suffering a heavy defeat at Naturena, Randburg AFC's U19 side bounced back in style, routing East Rand Athletic 7-0 in front of a home crowd to reignite their GDL campaign.

Randburg AFC U19 side returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, thrashing East Rand Athletic Football Club 7-0 in a Gauteng Development League fixture at home.

Captain Sipho Junior Muntanga was the standout performer, completing a hat-trick while Anam Nkele grabbed a brace. Modise Mojapelo and Rorisang Tsaagane added further gloss to a commanding scoreline.

Muntanga opened the scoring to send Randburg into the break a goal to the good. The captain continued where he left off seconds into the second half, tapping in to double the advantage before hammering home a fourth.

Speaking after the final whistle, Muntanga reflected on what the result means after a difficult run of form.

“Top performance today, obviously a home game, so we had to make sure that we got all three points. Winning 7-0 sends a big statement out to the other teams within the league. The past few games we’ve been inconsistent, but I think today is a good way to get us back on form.”

The result follows a 6-2 defeat at Naturena the previous week, and Muntanga acknowledged the side had used that setback as motivation.

“We forget about that game, we move on. We focused more on the basics in the week, in terms of formation, technique and tactical awareness. Just getting the boys in the right mindset in terms of getting that winning mentality back.”

Coach Colins Mbesuma was largely satisfied but pointed to a drop in intensity once the goals began to pile up.

“The boys came to the party. The second half was much better. But when you score four or five, the tempo drops. When you miss against a Sundowns or a Shifts, it’s high intensity. If you make a mistake, they punish you.”

East Rand coach Andrew Mitchell was gracious in defeat. “We actually didn’t have players. We’re still busy reinforcing our squad, but we’ll get there. This is only a lesson for us. The boys were positive.”

For Randburg, the result arrives at the right time ahead of a reported trip to Cape Town.
