Meet the God-fearing rapper KapFresh
RANDPARK RIDGE – KapFresh is making giant leaps in his career.
Koketso Motseothata, popularly known as ‘KapFresh’, is set to release his new single Won’t stop at the end of September. The Randpark Ridge resident discusses this, and his musical journey.
• What inspired you to get into music?
I grew up in a very musical family, my grandmother is a singer at church and so was my great grandfather.
• What makes you unique as an artist in South Africa?
I honestly feel I bring something new, fresh and a whole new meaning to ‘Christian rapper’, mixed with good lyricism and Motswako flavour.
• Who would you say influences your sound the most and why?
Khuli Chana in his rhythm schemes and flow techniques – I love how he switches it up with Motswako, which brings the African flavour. Reason (since I got the privilege to open for him in the #Battle4UJ event in 2014) and Proverb with their lyricism. Drake is the ultimate icon, for him music is just natural and how he accommodates everyone who listens to him.
• What are your thoughts on South Africa’s music industry right now, particularly your genre?
Hip hop is definitely growing in SA. I feel that a lot has been accomplished, but yet still a lot has to be done. Here in SA, hip hop is seen as an American thing and that is why we infuse it with Motswako to have that Africanism to it.
•How would you describe your music?
KapFresh, aka ‘The God-fearing Artist’; aka ‘The rapper that brings a blessing within every verse’ is what I go by. My music is in a way it can accommodate everyone. I want to channel my music that everybody can relate to.
•What lessons have you learned so far in your journey to becoming an artist?
As an upcoming artist no one takes you seriously and proving to those who doubted you wrong. Learning to never accept things at first glance is also a key – especially, when people start proposing endorsement deals to you.
