Book your cause

JOBURG - Connect with other book lovers this library week.

Forgood, an online platform that connects people to causes, has made it easy to take part in South African Library Week, as individuals and groups can connect with a cause that has a book-related need and in so doing they can get involved in Library Week, which runs from 13 to 21 March.

“There’s some amazing stuff you can do, all connected to the humble book,” said Andy Hadfield, CEO of Forgood. “You can help establish a school library, read to children, sort and cover school books and donate or sponsor a book, bookcase or stationery to a worthy cause. Forgood has gathered all of these needs onto a single online platform,” Hadfield added.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate library week:

  • Book Dash gathers creatives to design and write new African storybooks, which it distributes for free to children across the country. You can get involved by donating one of their beautiful books at R10 each.
  • Read to Rise promotes youth literacy in under-resourced communities. You can get involved by donating construction materials for a new mini-library in Mitchells Plain, sponsoring books for learners in Soweto or hosting a session to cover storybooks in plastic in your office.
  • Readers R Leaders offers reading assistance and runs a weekly book club in Westbury. You can get involved in their latest project, establishing a library at a local primary school.
  • TLC Children’s Home provides a place of safety and facilitates adoptions for abandoned and orphaned babies. You can get involved in their Sharing Books with Babies initiative, reading aloud to toddlers.
