Randburg Art Society member feels most peaceful in nature

Local painter says good artists knows how to use light and shadow well to convey distance and create shapes.

Many kilometres from the city, the quiet of the outdoors is only broken by the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze and the pleasant songs of birds.

Arid landscapes spotted with determined vegetation sit unmoving under clear blue skies unmarred by any pollution, broken only by solitary white puffs of clouds lazily making their way across the sea of azure.

So it is with much of the countryside in South Africa, and this is what Allan Watson lives for.

The Randburg Art Society member has been painting for 16 years and even in Blairgowrie, his landscapes take him back to where his heart is.

“I am happiest when I am out in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle,” Watson told Randburg Sun while showing some of his paintings at a society meeting.

“It is there one feels truly peaceful. I mainly do landscapes and I only use oil.”

Watson believes every artist has a different style and eye for things, but a good artist knows how to use light and shadow well to convey distance and create shapes.

The society is now back at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre after the centre was closed for an extended period after a botched renovation contract in 2021 and much of 2022.

The group meets every Monday morning to share ideas and work on art among other like-minded people.
