Old Parks Bowling Club launches new season against Morningside
Greens running fast after winter provided the stage as bowlers tested new combinations and rallied around an unwell teammate.
Old Parks Bowling Club launched their season against Morningside Country Club on October 31.
In the first round of the league trips, three ladies’ players each got the opportunity to bowl three bowls. The men’s section also joined the action, playing in the premier league against Jeppe Quondam Club and Protea Club on freshly maintained greens.

Old Parks Bowling Club member and secretary Vanessa Mc Jarrod, who has been playing for four years, shared her personal experience of the first game in her new role as a skip. “It was so nice playing on greens coming out of winter, and I am settling into my new role as a skip. This position is one where one plays into it with time and more experience, and I did the best I could today, but I am looking forward to brushing up on my technical skills,” said Mc Jarrod.
As the games progressed, camaraderie took centre stage as one of the players fell ill. Morningside Country Club bowler Vanessa de Scally shared her highlight of the match. “We played very well and everyone was so welcoming, but as one of our bowlers fell ill, watching everyone come together to make sure she was okay. Shows that there are some really good people out here. It shows that the culture in this sport is not always about winning, but about sportsmanship. However, truly, my biggest highlight was winning the game,” De Scally said.
