Sharonlea Primary hosts community market day

Alongside jumping castles and food stalls at the Sharonlea Primary market day, children got to experience a F1 simulator, giving them a glimpse into the fast-paced world of motorsport.

High energy and joyful spirits filled the air at Sharonlea Primary School yesterday as learners and parents gathered in support of the school’s first market day.

Attendees had the pleasure of visiting a variety of stalls and a wide range of food selections under the sun as the day progressed. The day started with a 5km walk within the community, with safety assistance from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), where parents and learners participated with grit and enthusiasm. They also played on jumping castles and visited the various stalls.

Sharonlea Primary School acting principal Carel Oosthuizen shared that the main purpose of the event was to support local businesses. “The day’s purpose is to create community awareness, get the community involved in the school, build neighbourly relationships and create a fun atmosphere before the exams start for the learners,” Oosthuizen said. “The funds raised will go into the development projects for the school, maintenance projects and bathrooms.”

Among the various stalls, Drivers Club gave learners the opportunity to engage with Formula 1 simulators, which assist in one of their many programmes scouting upcoming drivers among South Africa’s youth from ages three to four.

Arnold Samuels highlighted why it was important to have this exposure at the market. “I have been obsessed with cars but didn’t have this kind of opportunity,” Samuels said. “These kids are the future, so by giving them the initial steps we get them excited.

We show them that these opportunities exist. We are just here to create a spark, exposing learners to a world that they never knew existed.”

The heat did not stop the fun as learners and parents enjoyed the fun-filled day with good food, friendships and good music.
