Watch: Social media goes bananas about baboon behaviour

Two viral videos featuring baboons have sent social media into a frenzy. Watch how two primates safely cross a Simon’s Town road and how a large troop chases off two cheetahs in Limpopo.

The phrase ‘to go bananas’ means to get overly excited, irrational or even crazy, according to the Oxford Dictionary.

Based on the number of views and comments, not one but two videos featuring baboon behaviour have sparked a whirlwind of attention on social media.

In the first video, the question ‘Why did the baboon cross the road?’ gets answered: To get to the other side. Caught in Simon’s Town in the Western Cape, two baboons are seen using a zebra crossing to move from one side of the road to the other.

The man in the video, which has been watched over a million times, is reportedly a baboon monitor from the NPO Green Group Simon’s Town. The NPO aims to reduce friction between the Seaforth baboon troop and nearby residents through a community-led monitoring initiative.

Meanwhile, another video has grabbed social media’s attention after Latest Sightings posted footage of a cheetah mother and cub being mobbed by a baboon troop in Limpopo.

Watched more than 120 000 times on YouTube and more than 830 000 times on Facebook, the internet ‘went ape’ for these clips.
