Two abnormal trucks caused major destruction on the streets of Finsbury on 11 June.

The trucks were traveling from Alberton to the Drakensberg using R559 Road on the outskirts of Finsbury.

The trucks carrying heavy duty loads were escorted by Gauteng Traffic Police when Randfontein traffic officers stopped them for an inspection.

It was found that all was in order except the fact that they had undermined the municipal rules of Randfontein and had no permit to travel through the town.

According to Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo, abnormal trucks are some of the greatest contributors to the deteriorating roads in Randfontein.

“The company which owns the trucks did not follow procedure and for that we have issued them with a fine simply because they disregarded the laws of this town.

“The company to which the trucks belong to should be aware of the requirements of transporting heavy duty goods in abnormal trucks.

“Usually, they would be expected to communicate with the municipality about their intentions of transporting abnormal goods across town.

“In turn they would be expected to pay a fee and would have Randfontein traffic officers deployed to them,” says Mampondo.

He adds that this should serve as a warning to companies whose abnormal trucks travel through Randfontein not to take chances and follow protocol in this regard.

“It is only a courtesy call because as it stands, Randfontein roads are in a deteriorating state and the municipality together with the residents are left to foot the bill of repairs,” says Mampondo.
