Staff members at the Department of Health in Randfontein dressed up in school uniform on 14 June in order to commemorate Youth Day marked on 16 June.

According to them, this was to appreciate the youth of 1976 which fought long and hard for the freedom that we enjoy today.

Winnie Masamula spoke on behalf of the department and said that the black youth during the Apartheid era fought against oppression and died for it to be done away with.

During this time, the youth embarked on a massive strike and took to the streets of Soweto to air their grievances against the government of that time and the educational system.

To date, they are remembered for their bravery and their efforts are celebrated in South Africa.

According to Masamula, it is because of such efforts that South Africa saw its turning point.

“We feel like we can never do enough for those who believed in freedom, for they struggled and sacrifised their lives for that common cause.

“We constantly have to keep celebrating their lives and assure each other that their struggle was not in vain,” says Masamula.
